Single-use plastic containers and bags are a huge part of our waste problem, and are much of what you’ll find in the trash islands in the ocean. But it’s hard to live a modern life without buying products in plastic, as there are very few options out there for laundry detergent, shampoo, milk, etc., that don’t include a plastic bottle. And don't even get me started about food packaging—I have yet to find a good source for many pantry staples that aren’t packed in plastic.
So what’s a good way to avoid buying too much plastic? Well, in addition to the old-school natural food coops, there are a growing number of local zero-waste stores that offer you the ability to:
- Buy zero waste products without plastic packaging
- Buy only what you need
- Bring your own storage containers and not pay for their weight
- Support a local business
On Chicago’s north side, we now have Eco & the Flamingo in Lincoln Square. It was started by co-owners, Jackie and Bethany, as a zero-waste general store, and true to the style, they’ve got a little bit of everything you need in your journey to keep less trash out of our landfills and oceans. The best part is you can bring your own clean containers (weigh them first so you don’t pay for the weight of the jar) to avoid using more plastic.
I visited recently and was impressed with the variety of cleaning products, pantry staples, and other household items they’ve assembled. There is dish soap, shampoo, lotion, spices, dried oats, rice, quinoa, nuts, chocolate, beans, various flours, coffee, tea, as well as locally made candles, gifts, and personal care products.
When I spoke with co-owner, Bethany, she said they would slowly add more products as they learn what customers are looking for.
While you will still need to shop for fresh food at the grocery store, I could see visiting here once a month to stock up on all your dried goods and cleaning products.
You can see their current menu on their website.
